From Edward D. Miller, M.D.
Dean of the Medical Faculty

January 21, 2007

I am writing to thank you for Run for Kathy's most recent gift to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in memory of your cousin, Kathryn D. Long. Your commitment to the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins opens new doors of discovery for our world-class physicians, nurses and scientists. The Kimmel Cancer Center was selected as one of the nation's first Comprehensive Cancer Centers and has active programs in clinical and laboratory research, education, community outreach, and prevention and control of cancer. Your gift is an investment in our mission and the lives we touch. Every day, we push the frontiers of science and patient care, finding new ways to offer health care and hope to people in our community and around the world. Philanthropy is crucial to our endeavors, making you a valued partner in all we do. On behalf of all my Hopkins colleagues, I extend my heartfelt thanks for your continued support.

On behalf of the faculty, staff and patients of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, it is my pleasure to thank you for your wonderful gift in memory of Kathryn D. Long. Your support is critical to our success and allows us to continue our leadership in cancer research and treatment. As one of only 39 comprehensive cancer centers in the country, our patients and families benefit from innovative research and advanced therapies; a world-renowned faculty that includes clinicians and scientists who continue to make breakthrough discoveries in cancer research; and family and patient-care services delivered by the finest oncology physicians, nurses, counselors, and social workers. As we continue our work to advance cancer care and treatment, I thank you for being a partner in our future - your future - as we continue to turn research into results. I value your support and welcome your further involvement with the Kimmel Cancer Center.

From Kathy Harget
Assistant Director
The Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center

October 13, 2006

The National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately 9 million Americans are alive today with a history of cancer. About 1.4 million cases have been diagnosed each year in the past 3 years. More than 1,500 people per day in the U.S. die of cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death, exceeded only by heart disease. Every one of us knows at least one person who has cancer or who has been affected by cancer in their lifetime. The overall 5-year cancer survival rate is 63%. At the Kimmel Cancer Center, 63% is simply not good enough. The funds you raise are helping us raise that number and save more lives through the use of new early detection methods, as well as less-toxic and more effective treatments. Our genetic discoveries are making history and you are partners in this success.

Please let your participants know that I am so thrilled that they are out there once again honoring the memory of Kathy and raising much-needed funds for our cancer research and patient care programs here at the Kimmel Cancer Center. Tell them that we're about to build a new Patient & Family Pavilion so that patients - children and adults - can stay on the medical campus while enduring long cancer treatments. The family suites will be equipped with both fun activities (like video games and DVDs), as well as state-of-the-art air filtration systems to protect our patients with compromised immune systems. We couldn't provide this important building to our patients and families without all of our supporters. So keep running! And remember all those you are helping while you're out there on the course.
